Ergonomic Seating Pioneer Niels Diffrient to Speak at The Aldrich

Ridgefield CT (March 2007): During his distinguished career as an industrial designer, Niels Diffrient has designed an unusually broad spectrum of products including sewing machines, tractors, telephones, high voltage towers, cameras, thermostats, stoves, airplane and helicopter interiors, and medical equipment.

Most recently he has been designing commercial furniture focusing on ergonomic chairs. On Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 8 pm, Diffrient will be at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum demonstrating his chair designs and sharing stories about his life-time in design. This is the second in a series of events at the Museum, For Members, By Members, which invites an Aldrich member to share his or her passion and expertise at a members-only event. A member of The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum for over 10 years, Niels Diffrient graduated from Cranbrook Academy in Architecture and Design, was a Fulbright Fellow to Italy and has taught at UCLA and Yale. He is widely published, most notable of which is the three volume compendium of human factors called Humanscale.

Among his many honors are included; Fellow in the Industrial Design Society, honorary doctorates from Art Center college and College For Creative Studies, Honorary Royal Designer from the Royal Society of Arts, London, honors from the American Institute of Architecture, Distinguished Alumnus Award from Cranbrook Academy, Daimler-Chrysler Innovation Award and National Design Award from Smithsonian/Cooper-Hewitt Museum.
